Still Not Sold on Meditation? Here’s 5 Reasons Why & How to Start Today.

Meditation has rightfully become a buzzword the past several years. Meditation is a practice where you work with your mind on awareness. You attempt to clear your mind and stay focused in the present moment. It reaps insurmountable science-backed benefits. The most comprehensive benefit of maintaining a regular meditation practice is that it enhances our overall well-being.

When I do mindfulness meditations for large groups, I hold space for them to sit in silence for the last five minutes. I can distinctly remember one person coming out of it once saying “Wow, I’m not even sure what to say. I have never sat in silence for that long before. It was really cool to just be with me.” How profound and quite honestly, mind boggling. How sad that the concept of sitting still and quiet, is just not embedded in western culture. That is until the pandemic hit, and we all found ourselves with some extra quiet time. Unfortunately, we also found ourselves lonely and in need of some connection. And here, meditation stepped in as the saving grace for so many. If you are one of those that it didn’t, let’s dive into five more reasons why you should start a meditation practice today:

1. Gain Clarity

That same person I mentioned earlier, reached out to me a few days later and said that his mind was the clearest it had ever been. He felt like his eyes and heart were open. Yes. That’s exactly it. Meditation yields clarity and a sense of openness that is almost indescribable. It is just a state of being.

2. Boost Focus & Productivity

As a society, we are always striving for more and wear the status of “busy” as a badge of honor. The idea of slowing down is lost in the sea of chaos. But what if you embraced the notion that slowing down actually sped you up, more positively and productively? Decluttering your mind can heighten your focus and efficiency. Meditation helps clear your mind and focus on the present moment, which in turn increases your performance.

3. Strengthen Self-Awareness, Confidence & Authenticity

It gives you time to be with yourself. Sometimes not literally, if you have kids around like myself. But, hopefully you can carve out some dedicated time to yourself, even if for only five minutes daily. You can take stock of how you are feeling and who you truly are. It helps you get to know yourself and build self-confidence while tapping into your true authentic self.

4. Helps You Learn to Manage Stress & Build Resilience

It enhances cognition and can alleviate stress and anxiety. You learn the true power of breath and how to use it to soothe your nervous system and reset your mood.

5. Increases Your Patience

When you learn to sit still, you inherently increase your tolerance and patience levels. You learn to take a pause before reacting, which is very powerful. This is a practice that both children and adults could benefit from.

I hope by now I have convinced you of at least one enticing benefit that has you itching to try meditation. Your next question from here might be “but how?” Here are some simple steps to help get you started:

  1. Carve out time and space. Try for a clear space 10 minutes daily, which is proven more powerful than 30–60 minutes weekly. Once you have a designated time and space:

  2. Sit comfortably for 5–10 minutes of quiet time in a quiet place. Set a timer if you need to.

  3. Focus on your breath. When your mind begins to wander, return your attention back to your breath. Your thoughts will be there, just allow them to float above like clouds.

  4. End with gratitude and kindness. Take a moment to thank yourself for making the time to practice. Self-care and self-compassion are so critical to your well-being.

Try to commit to meditating everyday. And of course, give yourself grace if it doesn’t happen. Although daily practice is deeply beneficial, sometimes life happens and that is okay too. Just pick it back up as soon as you can. It’ll soon become a regular ritual that your mind and body will crave, and it will become second nature to implement into your regular routine and rhythm of your life. It will feel so revitalizing to have a simple, free practice you can commit to daily that you know will leave you feeling refreshed and energized.
